Woodblock Printing and Mixed Media
May 2007
Although I studied etching for many years, recently I feel more comfortable in handling woodblock, Sumi (ink made out of soot from wood), and handmade Japanese paper as the media. In particular, I have been more and more attracted to the subtle beauty of the gray scale produced by Sumi and the varying natural textures and shades of the handmade Japanese paper. These organic media are truly living things and delicately respond to the conditions of the environment. The inspiration for the Winter Verse series came from my memory of the Japanese Winter.
I use only handmade Japanese paper and Sumi ink for my works with a touch of gold and silver leaves. Falling Snow 1 and Falling Snow 2 are woodblock prints produced based on the image of snow flakes falling from the dark sky. To create this texture, I printed many woodblocks with very thin Sumi ink overlapping each other. Winter Sun 1, Winter Sun 2, Winter Cloud 1, and Winter Cloud 2 are the works of mixed media produced using woodblock printing and wax painting.
